What is "mindful eating"? Mindful eating is about focusing on improving how you feel when you eat, rather than simply focusing on changing how you look or achieving a certain number on the scale.
How is mindful eating different than "dieting"? The vast majority of diets fail because they offer logical nutritional advice, as if the only thing keeping you from eating right is knowledge about food! Many people today have all the food-related knowledge they will ever need, and much more knowledge than our grandparents or ancestors ever had. And yet this kind of advice only works if you have conscious control over your eating habits. It doesn’t work when emotions hijack the eating process – and for the majority of people they do!
Ask yourself: how often do you pay attention to your thoughts and feelings before, during and after eating? And how are your emotions, thoughts and cravings influencing your health and your weight?
- Mindful eating is a practice that develops awareness of your current eating habits, along with awareness of your underlying feelings/emotions and body sensations. It teaches you to pause between your cravings, triggers and your actions.
- The International Association for the Study of Obesity found that around 86 percent of interventions using mindful eating show significant improvements in “obesity-related eating behaviors”, specifically binge eating, emotional eating and external eating. Compare that to studies about dieting: UCLA researchers have found that 75-95 percent of people cannot maintain weight loss of the targeted "10 percent of body weight" and that within 2 years of a successful diet, 83 percent of people gain back more weight than they had lost.
Mindful eating will help you improve:

- Choosing foods that give you both enjoyment and nourishment
- Learning to meet your emotional needs in ways other than eating
